A brown-haired woman (Madeline Janis) sits at a desk making a phone call. Behind her are signs reading "KK: Patrocinada for los hoteles!" and "Nightmare!"

Madeline Janis, director of the L.A. Alliance for a New Economy (LAANE) makes phone calls during the campaign to defeat Santa Monica Proposition KK in 2000. A lawyer and long-time immigrant rights advocate, Janis was recruited by Maria Elena Durazo and Miguel Contreras in 1993 to lead a new organization that would advocate for low-wage immigrant workers and work in partnership with unions. Originally called the Tourism Industry Development Council, it later became the Los Angeles Alliance for a New Economy (LAANE).
