Daniel Ruiz was a respected leader among workers at the Hyatt hotel in Los Angeles. In 1978 fellow union members nominated him for union office, but the union blocked his nomination because he was not a US citizen. With the help of the ACLU, Ruiz sued his union and won the right to fully participate.
