In 1978, members of the Hotel and Restaurant Employees union Local 11 challenged their union’s ban on non-citizen officers. One of their candidates was Daniel Ruiz, a resident immigrant and long-time union member. With help from the ACLU, they sued their union and won the right to stand for election.
